There are three goals in Hit Like A Girl:
  1. Build confidence and create a positive self-image
  2. Set boundaries in every inter-personal relationship you have
  3. Know how to respond, physically and socially, when your boundaries are crossed
With Hit Like A Girl! Self-Defense, you will not only learn how to defend yourself from physical assault, but also how to react when friends, partners, or co-workers cross your boundaries. Self-Defense is not complete without a strong mental defense as well. Throughout this class, you will be guided by caring, responsive, hopeful women who want you to succeed in every aspect. Read below about how we accomplish our three goals.
In Hit Like A Girl, we break down self-defense into two main sections: Mental Defense, and Physical Defense.

Mental Defense

Self-Defense starts with the idea that YOU ARE WORTH SAVING. This includes building self-esteem and confidence. We can't do that for you, but we will help you on your journey. Mental defense also means prevention: preventing coworkers and friends from taking advantage of you, setting boundaries with your friends, family, partner/spouse, and learning why those boundaries need to exist.
  • Empowerment & life motivation
  • Retraining our internal narrative to be a positive one, through affirmations and self-love
  • Body language training
  • Assertive speech practice
  • Setting boundaries
  • Encouragement to challenge rape culture and misogyny to create a safer society for future women
NOTE: We DO NOT victim-blame, tell women what to wear, or how to act. We believe each woman has a right to personal safety, and that no one ever deserves to be assaulted. However, we do share certain tips to keep ourselves out of potentially dangerous situations.

Physical Defense

Physical Defense is where we kick butt! But that's not all. Before we practice striking and blocking, we practice situational awareness. More importantly, we train our stress response to be "fight" rather than "freeze." Then, of course, the basics: how to hit and where to hit. More advanced students will also practice how to escape from grabs and other dangerous situations.
  • Situational awareness
  • Safety at night, in parking lots, in other unsafe places
  • Training fight/flight/freeze response into "fight" mode
  • Pre-positioning
  • Striking & blocking
  • Vital points on male and female bodies
  • Hip power & yelling
  • Endurance, agility, strength
  • How to escape from grabs
  • Defense from a seated position, from a prone position
  • Using environment and objects
